We have always heard that Pakistan is as beautiful as Switzerland but did you know there is a place in India which is known as Mini Switzerland?

Khajjiar or Mini Switzerland is a hill station situated in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh 24 km from Dalhousie, India. Khajjiar is a place full of dense forest, meadows, and view of snow covered Kailash.  It is 6500 feet above sea level. There are many places in India which are beautiful and one should visit. Every place has its own quality and specialty, some are very nature-friendly, some are adventurous but Khajjiar is the rare place which is the combination of lake, pasture, and forests.

Why is it called Mini Switzerland?

On July 1992, Mr. Willy T Blazer, Vice Counselor and the Head of Chancery of Switzerland had first marked Khajjiar on the world map by calling it Mini Switzerland. He had also put a signboard of a yellow Swiss hiking footpath showing Khajjiar’s distance from the Swiss capital Berne 6194 KM. Khaijjiar has topographical resemblance with Switzerland among 160 locations in the world. Mr. Willy, the Counselor also took a stone from Khajjiar to make it the part of a stone collage around the Swiss Parliament to remind visitors of Khajjiar as Mini Switzerland.  It derives its name from the famous ancient temple Khajinag.

How to reach Khajjiar?

Mini Switzerland can be reached from Dalhousie which is the nearest town and hill station. It will take 1 hour or one and a half hour from Dalhousie to reach Khajjair. It is the best place for the nature lovers, who want to explore more and more of nature and peace that’s why it is known as Mini Switzerland of India.  April -June is the best months to visit Khajjiar.

The options for eating are limited here, as there are only a few restaurants and the main is street stalls where only noodles and soups are popular. The hotels and resorts you are staying offer you wide variety of food.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Kalatop is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Khajjiar. It is situated between Dalhousie and Khajjiar Lake. This place is best known for nature walks and hikes. Kalatop is full of trees like Blue Pine, Green Oak, and Rhododendron.  Animals like Black bear, serow, langur, jackal, and leopard are found there. It is the favorite place for picnics and trekking.

Khajjiar Lake

Khajjiar Lake is enriched with lush green forests, it is a natural lake located at an elevation of 1920 meters. If you are feeling low, out of life then it is the best place to regenerate your mind and body. The center of attraction is the island that floats, which is actually a cluster of grass which is growing on the surface of the lake. Mount Kailash is also visible from the lakeside. There are adventures sports like Paragliding, Zorbing and horse riding.

Khajji Nag Temple

Khajji Nag temple is one of the oldest temples of Himachal Pradesh. It was built in 12th century in Hindu-Mughal architecture style and pattern. The inner part of the temple is made of woods.  Khajji Nag temple consists of Lord Shiva, lord Hidimba, and images of Pandava and Kaurava. People still believe in the old goat sacrifice which is practiced here.

Panchpula, Chatryara

Panchpula is the best place to visit near Khajjiar. It is surrounded by thick pine and deodar trees.  There are many beautiful waterfalls in the pine forests.
