Though reservation system is an evident discrimination, it had been started with a very good objective of uplifting the socially backward society to give them equal opportunities. But with time its meaning and the way it has been taken by the people has left many of us to believe that it has stopped delivering for what it was made. Nowadays political parties are using it as a weapon and a trick to amass voters. Every time when elections are around we can clearly see the visibility of bold statements and promises on reservations. It is difficult to understand whether reservations are to remove discrimination from the country or to increase it because now reservation system is only dividing the society, leading to more discrimination and conflicts between different sections. Reserved people support that party in elections which brings them into the reserved quota and so and so forth continues.
Since the day caste-based reservations were implemented in India, there has been simmering dissatisfaction among the groups. The resentment may have increased over the past few decades due to the expansion of reservation policy. For a country like India which has scarce and limited public resources, reservations unquestionably have important social, economic and political implications on each one of us.
Where everyone has something to say on reservations, in the midst Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has discovered a formula on reservation on how can we implement reservation most effectively? , he said-“The fight of backward and forward will be over, people of every community should be counted and given the right to the population according to the population, the population should be given reservation”.
Akhilesh Yadav also separated pool of talented people in his formula, he said “when our talented people are not getting the opportunities due to reservation,” as per our formula keep 20% of seats reserved for talented people, toppers can come in this category belonging to any caste, “Though there are not many talented people here, they will not be able to fill even 20% of seats, otherwise they can be kept 10 -15%, who so ever is talented can come through this pool”
In India, we have never heard that census has been ever conducted on the basis of caste, But Chief of Samajwadi Party does not find it a big obstacle, he said” How have you linked all the people with Aadhaar? Today we have such technology that if you want you can get the information about the caste of people from mobile phones. We have a variety of technologies to support the same, this is not a big issue.”
Just to remind you a few months back Samajwadi Party President demanded the cap on quota from present 50 percent be increased to 69 percent. He said the reservation limit in Tamil Nadu is 69 percent and it should be increased in UP also. “ If Tamil Nadu government can raise the limit of reservation for the SC, ST, and OBCs to 69 percent then why the same cannot be done elsewhere.
We are not sure that his new formula will help Uttar Pradesh to grow enough but this will definitely help him to win coming election under the name of ‘Reservation’ because not only Samajwadi party but BJP also collected votes in the name of reservations in last elections in UP. Power comes and goes but what has remained same is the weapon of ‘reservation’.The reservation has become the kind of cure which is worse than the disease itself.
